Prevent Chimney Fires By Cleaning Now...

I was walking in my neighborhood this morning, and smelled the distinctive note of a chimney being started without having cleaned it. Sure enough, the whole block was smoked in, and I was left thinking of whether or not whoever had the fire going knew if they were having a chimney fire or not.

Here's what can happen - Chimney Nightmares!!!!

 - That's a creosote buildup nightmare. Note how the chimney crown was cracked - he'll want to replace it. I DO NOT recommend that you attempt to clean your chimney with a 2X4. That's not the way to do it. Especially if this chimney has had a fire in it, the bricks will be very brittle. Knocking creosote and ash buildup off the bricks will damage them. When ash and creosote mix with water, they effectively become mortar! (Think lime - it was the old-fashioned way to make cement.) I would recommend lining this chimney, since there is a high chance of brick and mortar damage.

Next - a chimney fire caused by a fella that thought he as doing the right thing. WRONG!

Folks, don't clean it yourself, don't purposely set large fires to "burn" it off...you could set fire to your house.
Just call me. Seriously, it's cheap, it's easier, and you won't have to worry. Simple!
