Scary, Strange Home Repair Nightmares 2

Yes, it's that time of year again, when I scour the internet, looking for images that dredge up the worst in homeowners' attempts to make things work. I have dutifully grabbed some photos that will shock and amaze you: 

#1. The home repair for a roof leak. 

*Note that this was a call-back, an inspector had seen it and asked for a repair, and this is what the homeowner did. Yes! 

#2. The DIY way to keep your awning up!

Well, at least they match. 

#3. The swamp cooler installed on the chimney. 

Quite inventive. 

#4. A rather strange chimney configuration.

Not sure what they were thinking.

 #4. Duct taped shingles.

Well, they seem to be staying put...

And now for the grand finale'  - the best of the best. 

#5. Radiator in the fireplace. 

That house will be warm - no matter what!

#6. This flue didn't quite make it, so....

Handy-dandy shoe box extension. 

#7. The electric heater wasn't enough, so...

They got a wood stove and plopped it right on top!

#8. Why use a perfectly good pie pan? 

Let's stick a milkman's hat in there. Nah, it won't catch on fire. 

And for the last, my personal favorite:

#9.  Why open the chimney to create a fireplace, when all you have to do is attach a big vent to it? 

Yup, they built a whole platform for it with slate and brick. and - why is the chimney all black? 

I dunno. 

The moral to the story?  Okay, one more: 

#10.  Flue stuck in ceiling. 

Don't, don't, don't do it yourself. See that? That's a flue that leads to the attic. It isn't even leaving the house. See the char on the wood? That's a fire waiting to happen. And the more charred the wood gets, the faster it'll take a spark.
